Leftist parties refuse to sign National Charter over revisions

Ahead of the July National Charter signing ceremony, four leftist parties announced they will not sign the charter unless a revised draft addressing their concerns is issued. The parties—Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BASOD), Basod (Marxist), and Bangladesh JASOD—made this decision at a press conference on Thursday at the CPB office in Dhaka.

Basod General Secretary Bazlur Rashid Firoz stated that the chief adviser had promised during the Consensus Commission’s inauguration that only agreed matters would be included in the final document. The leftist parties criticized the charter for misrepresenting Bangladesh’s Liberation War history and political movements, and for not addressing their suggested corrections despite repeated requests. Consequently, the parties have withheld their signatures until their concerns are addressed and the charter is revised.
