Trump claims India will stop buying Russian oil despite MEA denial

US President Donald Trump reiterated his claim on Friday that India has “de-escalated” its purchase of Russian oil, stating that the country is no longer buying it in large quantities. Trump mentioned that India had previously bought around 38% of its oil from Russia but assured that it would stop doing so soon. He noted that while the process of halting the purchase was not immediate, it would be completed shortly, and this would help in ending the conflict.

However, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) rejected Trump’s claims about a telephonic conversation between him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that there had been no such discussion.

While India has increased its purchase of Russian oil in recent years, China remains Russia’s largest energy buyer. Trump’s statements came as India’s trade team was in Washington for ongoing discussions with US officials. Additionally, India is exploring ways to diversify its energy imports, including the possibility of importing more crude oil and natural gas from the US.
