Trump ends Canada trade talks over ad

President Donald Trump ended all trade discussions with Canada on Thursday after Ontario aired an advertisement featuring Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs. Trump had placed duties on Canadian steel, aluminum and vehicles earlier this year, prompting retaliatory measures from Ottawa. The two nations had spent weeks negotiating agreements for their steel and aluminum industries before Trump announced the termination on Truth Social.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford acknowledged on Tuesday that Trump noticed the provincial campaign showing Reagan warning against tariffs, causing unemployment and trade conflicts. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation stated the Ontario government used edited audio and video without authorization and considered legal action. Foundation officials said the material misrepresented a 1987 presidential radio address.

Prime Minister Mark Carney told journalists on Thursday that Canada would reject unfair American market access if negotiations collapsed. Trump has imposed tariffs reaching levels unseen since the 1930s as leverage against multiple countries. The United States, Canada and Mexico plan to review their 2020 continental free trade agreement next year.
