Trump, Xi to meet in South Korea
Donald Trump and Xi Jinping will meet on Oct. 30 in South Korea, where both leaders will attend regional economic talks. The White House announced the bilateral discussion will take place alongside the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit, which runs from Oct. 31 through Nov. 1 in Gyeongju. Trump threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on Chinese products if Beijing maintains export limits on rare earth materials used in electronics and vehicles.
The presidents last spoke face-to-face in 2019 when Trump served his first term. China controls most global production of specialized minerals that manufacturers require for phones and automobiles. Trade friction between Washington and Beijing has grown since China restricted shipments of critical resources in October. Trump plans separate meetings with leaders from Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan as part of his Asian trip that begins with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations gathering on Sunday.
