Two guides detained after hiker’s death on Gunung Liang

Two mountain guides in their 40s have been detained to assist in the investigation into the death of 34-year-old hiker Mustaqqeem Mansoor on Gunung Liang, near Tanjong Malim. Perak deputy police chief SAC Mohammad Azlin Sadari said the guides had valid permits for the Fraser’s Hill trek in Pahang but lacked the required permit for the forest reserve area in Perak. They were arrested under Section 47 of the National Forestry Act 1984 but have been released on police bail after providing statements.

The victim, Mustaqqeem Mansoor from Sungai Petani, Kedah, died from ill health, not from a fall as initially reported. He collapsed while hiking with 10 friends, who started from Fraser’s Hill, Pahang, and descended through Gunung Liang in Perak. The rescue team, including the Perak Fire and Rescue Department, is still working to recover the body.

Efforts to retrieve the body by helicopter were delayed due to bad weather.
