Two women die after migrant boat runs aground off Chios

On Friday, the bodies of two women were found on the rocky coast of Greece’s Chios Island after a makeshift boat carrying 29 migrants ran aground. The Greek coastguard said that during the rescue operation, two women were found lifeless, while 10 others, including three seriously injured, were taken to a hospital.

The vessel had departed from the Turkish coast before encountering difficulties near Chios, a key entry point into Europe for migrants fleeing war and poverty. Overcrowded and poorly equipped boats often capsize during the perilous journey across the Aegean Sea. Earlier this month, four bodies were recovered after an inflatable boat sank near Lesbos.

In a separate incident, 23 migrants were rescued near Crete. Greece remains at the forefront of Europe’s migration crisis, with increasing numbers of migrants, particularly from Libya, seeking refuge. Human rights groups continue to call for safer routes for asylum seekers to prevent further loss of life.
