UCB unveils first carbon report
United Commercial Bank released its 2024 sustainability report and became among the first financial institutions in Bangladesh to publicly share carbon emission data. The bank measured pollution from its lending portfolio and energy use in accordance with international accounting standards. Chairman Sharif Zahir attended the launch ceremony at headquarters, where executives outlined plans to expand renewable energy financing while reducing support for carbon-intensive sectors.
The lender aims to reach net zero emissions by 2050 through operational improvements and shifts in its investment strategy. Officials said the report demonstrates a commitment to environmental protection alongside business growth. Customers will benefit from clearer banking practices while borrowers gain access to financing that lowers long-term expenses. The bank plans to support green construction, efficient agriculture, and waste reduction projects that strengthen national climate resilience.
