Woltemade header seals Germany’s 1-0 win over Northern Ireland in World Cup qualifier
Germany narrowly defeated Northern Ireland 1-0 in Belfast on Monday to stay top of their 2026 World Cup qualifying group. Nick Woltemade scored the only goal of the match with a header in the 31st minute, marking his first goal for Germany.
The win kept Germany ahead of Slovakia on goal difference, both teams having three wins from four matches. The Germans will host Slovakia in November, with the top team in the group guaranteed a World Cup spot. Northern Ireland, despite the loss, are only three points behind the leaders and still in contention.
Germany survived an early scare when Northern Ireland’s Daniel Ballard had a goal ruled out for offside. Woltemade’s header from a David Raum corner put Germany in front, and though Northern Ireland pressed late, they couldn’t find an equalizer.
