Work begins on highway expansion from Asenovgrad to Smolyan

Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov met with parliamentary and municipal officials to advance highway construction linking Asenovgrad with Smolyan while enhancing transportation access across the Rhodope region. Parliamentary Committee Chairman Nikolay Nankov, lawmakers Krasimir Sabev and Khalil Letifov, Smolyan Mayor Nikolay Melemov, regional leaders, and infrastructure officials participated in discussions focused on accelerating development timelines.

Technical documentation has been completed for initial expansion work, with procurement procedures scheduled to begin in 2026. Authorities plan to add a third lane along the Asenovgrad-Smolyan corridor, including a Chepelare bypass route, before ultimately widening the entire roadway to four lanes with expressway specifications.

Participants highlighted improved connectivity as essential for attracting investment capital and establishing sustainable employment opportunities throughout the mountain territory. Regional Development Minister Ivan Ivanov and Road Infrastructure Agency Chairman Yordan Valchev joined discussions alongside Smolyan Regional Governor Zahari Sirakov.
