Zimbabwe’s water gains win global praise in Madrid
Zimbabwe’s advances in water and sanitation drew international recognition at the Sector Ministers’ Meeting in Madrid. Deputy Minister Davis Marapira highlighted national efforts, including large-scale dam construction, borehole drilling, and village business units, that have improved access for rural and vulnerable communities. He cited the Presidential Borehole Drilling initiative as a key achievement under President Mnangagwa, noting praise from officials at the forum.
Ministers from Nigeria, Uganda, Croatia, and Brazil commended Zimbabwe’s approach. Former Chilean President Dr. Michelle Bachelet and UNICEF’s Director for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, Dr. Cecilia Sharp, emphasized that integrated water and sanitation services are vital to fighting poverty and protecting the most vulnerable during crises. They stressed that sustainable progress requires government-led policies and cross-sector coordination. The meeting affirmed that linking water, sanitation, hygiene, and climate resilience is both a practical need and a political duty.
