Zohran Mamdani rises as NYC’s first Muslim mayor candidate
Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old state lawmaker, leads the race to become New York City’s first Muslim mayor after winning the Democratic primary in June. The Uganda-born, Indian-descended politician gained citizenship in 2018 and has represented Queens in the state assembly since his 2018 election.
Mamdani campaigns for affordable housing through expanded rent controls, free childcare and public transit, plus city-operated grocery stores serving the 8.5 million residents. His progressive platform supports Palestinian rights while condemning the Gaza conflict as genocide, positions that anger some Jewish voters, though he denounces antisemitism.
President Donald Trump labels him a communist, yet political scientists note that both men appeal to voters frustrated with established powers. Columbia University Professor Lincoln Mitchell describes his strategy as blending 1970s grassroots organizing with modern social media tactics. The soccer enthusiast recently wed illustrator Rama Duwaji and previously worked in preventing home foreclosures.
