16 bodies recovered from Mirpur factory fire as chemicals fuel blaze

Sixteen charred bodies have been found so far in the aftermath of a deadly fire at NR Garments in Mirpur, Dhaka, on Tuesday. The bodies, discovered on the second and third floors of the factory, were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, though they’re unrecognizable, and DNA tests may be needed for identification.

Fire Service Director Lt Col Tajul Islam Chowdhury confirmed the grim details during a briefing. He said the roof was sealed with tin and mats, and the padlocked grill door blocked workers from escaping. A chemical explosion likely released toxic smoke, causing many to lose consciousness and die instantly.

Rescue teams, with 12 fire units on-site, have controlled the fire in the garment section, but flames in the chemical warehouse are still burning. Some chemicals stored there are making it harder to fully extinguish the blaze. One volunteer was injured in the operation, but no fire service personnel were harmed.
