ACC to probe graft at home and abroad
Bangladesh will expand the authority to investigate corruption to cover citizens abroad and foreign residents under proposed legal changes. Law Adviser Asif Nazrul announced the plans on Thursday after an Advisory Council session led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka. The council approved the Anti-Corruption Commission Amendment Ordinance in principle.
The commission has the power to investigate allegations against any person residing in Bangladesh, regardless of citizenship status. Officials can also pursue cases against Bangladeshi nationals when evidence suggests misconduct occurred outside the country. Specific procedures for conducting overseas investigations remain undefined and await final legislation details before implementation begins.
