ALDE calls for suspension of EU payments over political arrests

The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe requested the temporary suspension of Bulgaria’s Recovery and Resilience Plan payments because of political detentions in the country. The alliance adopted the resolution at its congress in Brussels on Friday and Saturday, asking member state parliaments to address unlawful political arrests in Bulgaria. Financial restrictions would remain until authorities free all political detainees.

ALDE Chair Svenja Hahn defended Bulgarian political prisoners and urged the European Commission to intervene from the European Parliament floor to protect Bulgarian democracy. Bulgarian representatives met supporters in Brussels on Friday evening and discussed Blago Kotsev’s detention, which they described as emblematic of Bulgaria’s problems. Kiril Petkov described Kotsev’s detention conditions, while Assen Vassilev noted rising societal tensions and international attention to the matter.
