Ambassador Willy Bett elected IOMed vice chair in Hong Kong

Kenya’s ambassador to China, Willy Bett, won election as vice chairperson of the Governing Council for the International Organisation for Mediation, a new intergovernmental body promoting peaceful dispute settlement through mediation. The organization launched on Monday in Hong Kong, where China’s Foreign Affairs vice minister Hua Chunying and Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee attended the ceremony. Bett’s appointment positions Kenya at the center of an initiative strengthening global peace and cooperation.

The IOMed will function as a neutral platform for resolving disputes among states, investors, and commercial entities after 38 countries signed its Constitutive Instrument on May 30, 2025. Prof. Teresa Cheng, a senior counsel and former Hong Kong Secretary for Justice, received appointment as the first Secretary General. Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei praised the development as aligned with Kenya’s mediation leadership across Africa.

Kenya’s involvement extends its active role in international peace efforts, from regional mediation in the Horn of Africa to global reconciliation frameworks. The country’s defense forces rank among Africa’s most professional peacekeepers. Bett’s election enhances Kenya’s influence in shaping international mediation architecture while reinforcing its stabilizing role in East Africa.
