Anthony Hopkins recalls turning point in battle with alcohol
Anthony Hopkins stopped drinking at age 11 when a powerful internal voice told him his alcoholic period had ended. The 87-year-old actor described the December moment in California when he drove while intoxicated and recognized he could have caused fatal harm. He approached a former agent at a Beverly Hills gathering and requested assistance with his substance problem.
The voice removed his alcohol cravings immediately and sounded like a calm male radio announcer speaking from within his consciousness. Hopkins told The New York Times podcast on Friday, October 25, that he believes this life force exists inside all people from birth. The Silence of the Lambs performer said he drank to compensate for childhood loneliness and bullying that created internal discomfort. He discusses the transformation in his forthcoming memoir, We Did OK, Kid.
