Guillermo del Toro refuses to use AI in future films

Director Guillermo del Toro rejected artificial intelligence tools for his filmmaking work and told a radio network he would prefer death over adopting generative AI systems. The 61-year-old creator compared technology enthusiasts to Victor Frankenstein from his Netflix adaptation and warned that human foolishness, rather than the tools themselves, poses the real threat. Del Toro said arrogant developers create products without examining results and called for reflection about technology’s direction.

The Mexican filmmaker blamed what he termed natural stupidity for driving harmful global developments. He connected the literary character’s hubris to modern tech industry leaders who push forward without considering consequences. His Frankenstein adaptation features Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz and Ralph Ineson in a version of Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel. Netflix will release the three-time Oscar winner’s production on Nov. 7.
