Aquaculture farmers urged to stay alert for flood season, follow weather updates

Aquaculture farmers across Malaysia have been urged to stay vigilant and closely monitor weather updates from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) as the flood season approaches. Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DOF) director-general Datuk Adnan Hussain stressed that preparedness is key, especially for farmers on the east coast.

Adnan advised fish cage farmers, particularly those in flood-prone areas, to sell market-ready fish immediately and avoid keeping them for too long to prevent losses from flooding. He also recommended postponing restocking during the monsoon season, which runs from November to March, and to resume once the weather stabilizes.

During the Selangor edition of the Rasa-Rasa Akuakultur Mega 2025 event, Adnan welcomed the RM178 million subsidies for fishermen announced in Budget 2026. He highlighted RM20 million for upgrading vessels, which will help fishermen operate in larger zones and use more eco-friendly equipment, as well as RM160 million in incentives based on actual catch landings to encourage more fishing activities.
