Asante ban on palm fruit, firewood explained by OTEC FM’s Boateng

Asante traditions prohibit carrying whole palm fruit bunches and bundled firewood into residences to protect small creatures and maintain sanitation. Cultural activist Kwame Agyenim Boateng told OTEC FM listeners on Monday that ancestors created the rule to prevent the deaths of insects and reptiles hiding in these items. Communities summon violators to the chief’s palace for questioning about their actions.

Boateng said the practice demonstrates respect for environmental balance between humans and wildlife. Ancestors attached penalties to the prohibition to ensure residents followed the custom. The regulation remains active in numerous Asante settlements across the region.
