AWS outage hits Snapchat, Reddit, banks in Virginia
Amazon Web Services experienced a major disruption on Tuesday that affected more than 1,000 companies and millions of internet users worldwide. The outage stemmed from a Domain Name System error at the company’s data center in North Virginia, which prevented users from accessing platforms such as Snapchat, Reddit, Roblox, Fortnite, and banking services from Lloyds and Halifax. AWS provides computing infrastructure for approximately one-third of internet operations globally.
The DNS failure prevented the system from directing traffic to operational platforms, though the services themselves remained functional. Industry experts characterized the incident as evidence of over-reliance on a single provider, but AWS maintains dominance despite competition from Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform. European alternatives remain limited, with only a few smaller competitors such as IBM, Alibaba, and Stackit attempting to challenge American market control.
