Azad empire built on stolen mill dreams
AK Azad purchased the defunct Muslin Cotton Mills in Kaliganj for 135 crore taka in 2013 despite valuations reaching 4,000 crore taka. The Ha-Meem Group executive promised to pay 200 crore taka owed to 2,400 workers, but delayed full payment until months before the 2024 election. Former employees claim the acquisition violated legal provisions after Azad missed contractual deadlines that should have voided the agreement by 2018.
The mill operated from 1951 through 1994 as one of South Asia’s largest textile facilities before closing with financial losses. Azad sold equipment worth 50 crore taka after acquiring the 81-acre property and allegedly evaded municipal taxes while serving as a parliament member from Faridpur. Workers organized protests on October 19, 2024, demanding unpaid wages, as many former employees died waiting for compensation.
