Bailey family killed in Montana crash
A helicopter accident in Montana claimed the lives of four relatives of Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey on Wednesday. His son Zachary Bailey died with his wife Kelsey and their children Vada Rose and Samuel when their aircraft went down near Ekalaka. The family’s third child, Finn, was not aboard the Robinson R66 helicopter that crashed.
Zachary Bailey piloted the helicopter for agricultural business operations on the family farm. The National Transportation Safety Board opened an investigation into the accident but has not determined what caused it. Running mate Aaron Del Mar confirmed no other passengers were present when the helicopter went down.
Bailey lost the 2022 governor’s race to Democrat JB Pritzker and seeks the Republican nomination for next year’s election. Governor Pritzker posted condolences through social media after learning of the deaths. The campaign said the Bailey family draws strength from their religious beliefs as they process their grief.
