US sanctions Rosneft and Lukoil over war
Washington targeted Russian energy giants Rosneft and Lukoil with new penalties on Wednesday as part of efforts to halt the Ukraine conflict. The Treasury Department blocked American assets and business dealings with both firms and their subsidiaries. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the measures aim to stop funding for Moscow’s military operations and support peace negotiations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the move as a measure of accountability for continued aggression. The European Union followed on Thursday with its 19th round of restrictions against Russian oil, finance, and defense sectors. The package tightens controls on petroleum sales and shadow tanker fleets while banning liquefied natural gas imports in stages.
Moscow dismissed the actions as threats to the worldwide economic order. President Vladimir Putin told state media the sanctions would not harm Russian finances. A Foreign Ministry representative, Maria Zakharova, criticized Washington for copying tactics from the previous administration.
