Melissa could strengthen into major hurricane
Tropical Storm Melissa hovered between Hispaniola and Jamaica on Thursday morning with 45 mph winds and signs of dangerous growth ahead. The system barely moved at 2 mph while meteorologists tracked falling wind resistance and hot ocean temperatures near 86 degrees that could trigger explosive development. Forecasters predicted hurricane status within two days and possible Category 3 strength, with 130 mph winds, by Sunday, as conditions align for intensification.
Officials urged Jamaicans and Haitians to finish protective preparations before destructive winds and flooding arrive on Friday or Saturday. Hurricane watches covered Jamaica and sections of Haiti from Port-au-Prince to the Dominican Republic border as the storm threatened extended periods of rainfall and mudslides. Computer forecasts showed conflicting paths, with some placing the center south of Jamaica, while others aimed directly at the island.
