Tropical Storm Melissa nears Haiti, Jamaica
Tropical Storm Melissa moved through Caribbean waters on Tuesday with winds of 50 mph, and forecasters were monitoring its path toward Haiti and Jamaica. The system sat 310 miles south-southwest of Port-au-Prince, while meteorologists predicted it would curve northwest as it slowed its westward movement. Officials posted a hurricane watch for Haiti’s southwestern coast and a tropical storm watch for Jamaica as the weather pattern approached both nations. Wind shear and dry conditions limited the storm’s development despite expectations for gradual strengthening.
The National Hurricane Center warned that Haiti and the Dominican Republic could receive 5 to 10 inches of rain through Friday, with serious flooding and mudslide risks. Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Aruba faced lighter precipitation between 1 and 3 inches from the system. Forecasters noted uncertainty about the track beyond Friday, depending on whether Melissa gains better organization. The storm became the 13th named system in an Atlantic season that has produced four hurricanes, with two reaching the strongest category.
