Bamboo prices rise as Myanmar struggles to meet export demand
Myanmar bamboo craft specialist U Kyaw Win reported that strong domestic demand has prevented exporters from fulfilling international orders despite growing foreign interest in the product. Raw bamboo shoot prices have surged nearly threefold compared to previous years, climbing from 600 to 700 kyats per viss to between 1,800 and 2,000 kyats, while fermented varieties command 5,000 to 6,000 kyats in local markets.
Small quantities currently reach China, Thailand and Japan, with American buyers also expressing long-term purchase interest for boiled bamboo shoots. However, insufficient raw material supplies have stalled wider export operations even as overseas purchasers wait for shipments.
Industry representatives emphasized the need to expand small-scale bamboo cultivation to meet rising demand for both the shoots and related bamboo products in thriving markets.
