Bangladesh considers removing portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from public spaces

Bangladesh is reportedly “considering” a proposal to remove portraits of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from public and private spaces, according to local media. The plan, announced by the National Consensus Commission (NCC) under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, aims to eliminate symbols tied to the 1971 Liberation War.

The NCC sent a letter to political parties on October 9, asking for written opinions by Saturday. The proposal includes removing clause 4(Ka) of the Bangladesh Constitution, which mandates portraits of Bangabandhu in all government and non-government offices.

This comes after a series of incidents, including vandalism of Liberation War memorials, sparking outrage. Since the Yunus-led interim government took power in August 2024, over 1,500 memorials have been destroyed.
