Rahul Gandhi slams Modi over Taliban press conference exclusion of women journalists

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, backed Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s criticism of the Centre over Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi’s press conference in Delhi, where women journalists were barred. Muttaqi, a Taliban leader, is infamous for policies that restrict women’s rights in Afghanistan. India has stayed cautious about engaging with the Taliban, citing human rights concerns.

Rahul Gandhi reposted Priyanka’s X post, accusing Prime Minister Modi of sending a message that women’s rights are weak under his leadership. He slammed the government’s silence on the issue, stressing women’s right to equality.

Priyanka earlier questioned how the government can claim to empower women while allowing such discrimination. The Centre denied involvement, stating the Afghan Consul General organized the event and the embassy’s premises were beyond Indian jurisdiction.
