Bangladesh dreams checked, Varshney on the brink

The Leonine 3rd Grandmasters Chess Tournament is unlikely to yield new Grandmaster or International Master norms for the host nation’s players. After seven rounds, Bangladeshi competitors, including International Master Tahsin Tajwar Zia, Manon Reja Neer, and FIDE Master Sakline Mostafa Sajid, failed to secure their IM norms. International Master Mohammad Fahad Rahman, who had a chance for a GM norm, also fell short mathematically following a recent loss.

In contrast, India’s International Master Aaryan Varshney leads the standings and requires just one more point from his final two matches to achieve his Grandmaster norm. The seventh round saw several decisive victories, with Varshney defeating Grandmaster Reefat Bin Sattar. Other notable wins included Manon Reja Neer over Mohammad Fahad Rahman and Abu Sufian Shakil’s victory against Tahsin Tajwar Zia.
