Bangladesh election commission clashes with NCP over shapla symbol dispute
Bangladesh’s Election Commission has asked the National Citizen Party to choose a symbol from the approved list by October 19, according to Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed. The NCP has repeatedly pushed for the water lily symbol, threatening to reject its registration if the EC does not agree. Ahmed said the commission would decide on the symbol if the party does not respond by the deadline. He clarified that the water lily is not on the list and there is no legal issue preventing its inclusion, but the EC sees no need for it.
The NCP warned that denying the symbol could disrupt next year’s elections, adding that it would push for an independent election commission if necessary.
