Barzani meets Russian ambassador to discuss oil, elections, and ties
Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani met with Russian Ambassador Elbrus Kutrashev on Sunday to address oil export arrangements, federal elections, and diplomatic relations between Moscow and Erbil. The leaders discussed the September agreement that resumed crude shipments after more than 2 years of suspension and agreed to continue cooperation.
Barzani emphasized that the upcoming parliamentary elections on Nov. 11 must proceed freely and democratically. He said the results should determine the next federal government’s formation based on constitutional principles. The ambassador and the Russian Consul General, Maxim Rubin, joined talks on political developments across Iraq.
Kurdistan exports resumed on Sept. 27, when oil began flowing from the Peshkabour station toward Turkey’s Ceyhan port at 190,000 barrels per day. Iraq’s state marketer SOMO manages sales under the three-month arrangement that allocates 50,000 barrels for domestic needs. Russian energy firms Gazprom and Rosneft invested billions in the region since 2012.
