Bliznashki warns of power grab in judiciary amid Sarafov mandate dispute
Former Prime Minister and constitutional law expert Prof. Georgi Bliznashki discussed the ongoing controversy surrounding the mandate of acting prosecutor general Borislav Sarafov. He argued that the real issue is not the legal dispute over his mandate but the broader effort to shift power within the judicial system.
Bliznashki criticized the 2023 judicial reform, which aimed to divide the Supreme Judicial Council into two colleges but ultimately failed because it lacked clear goals. He believes the reform was designed to take control of the prosecutor’s office, but the approach was politically driven, not statesmanlike.
He also agreed with former Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court of Cassation, Rumen Nenkov, who argued that there is no official ruling on Sarafov’s legitimacy. Bliznashki emphasized that such changes to the judicial system are risky and should stop, as they threaten the stability of Bulgaria’s legal system.
