Boris Bonev urges action on Sofia garbage contract probe
Boris Bonev of Save Sofia has criticized the Commission for the Protection of Competition for failing to respond more than a month after he flagged potential cartel activity among companies bidding on a nearly 1 billion leva waste management contract for the Bulgarian capital. The Save Sofia chairman expressed concerns that institutional delays pose risks to the city, emphasizing the need for the commission to demonstrate independence by acting in citizens’ interests rather than protecting businesses that allegedly divide Sofia into territorial zones through coordinated arrangements.
The procurement ranks among the largest in municipal history and directly affects service quality for millions of capital residents. Save Sofia representatives warned that without genuine competitive bidding, the city risks continuing its relationship with providers who have delivered substandard services at elevated costs for years, demanding a comprehensive examination of all bidders and procedural terms to prevent wasteful spending on ineffective waste collection systems.
