Fines for average speed violations in Bulgaria start February
Bulgaria’s National Toll Administration has transmitted all recorded average speed violations to the Ministry of Interior, though enforcement protocols remain under development with penalties scheduled to begin in February, Diana Rusinova from the European Center for Transport Policies told Bulgarian National Radio. Drivers who exceeded limits since the system’s activation will face retroactive fines once the framework becomes operational, she noted, adding that camera monitoring has already prompted motorists to reduce speeds.
Analysis suggests road casualties are shifting from summer concentration to a May through November pattern, primarily affecting high-traffic corridors, including two accident hotspots along the Trakia motorway. Rusinova attributed the injury trends to infrastructure deficiencies, inadequate driver training, and insufficient enforcement, particularly in areas with lax construction oversight, where official state data confirms elevated accident clustering.
