Budget committee fails to meet quorum amid tensions
Parliamentary efforts to conduct budget consultations with labor groups and business representatives collapsed after coalition lawmakers failed to provide minimum attendance. GERB committee chairman Delyan Dobrev terminated the session organized by opposition party Continuing the Change, noting the absence of union delegates and employers, while questioning the gathering’s legitimacy. Deputy Finance Minister Kiril Ananiev defended government engagement, stating he previously explained budget details to social partners through the National Council for Tripartite Cooperation.
Opposition leader Asen Vassilev characterized the breakdown as evidence of severe dysfunction within the governing coalition that threatens broader state operations. He accused the administration of pursuing the largest tax expansion in nearly three decades to fund substantial salary increases for political appointees rather than maintaining productive dialogue with economic stakeholders. The National Council for Tripartite Cooperation will review draft budgets for the health insurance fund, social security system, and state operations during separate consultations.
