Bulgaria hit by strongest magnetic storm of 2025
Bulgaria experienced its most powerful geomagnetic disturbance of the year after three consecutive X-class solar eruptions struck Earth’s magnetic field. The National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences registered a maximum K-index reading of 9 at its Panagyurishte observatory, marking an extremely strong magnetic storm. Associate Professor Petya Trifonova explained that plasma waves from the solar outbursts penetrated the magnetosphere and created atmospheric disturbances across the planet.
The geophysicist warned that sensitive individuals may experience headaches, cardiac irregularities, and sleep disruption during such events. Satellites face potential communication failures and orbital decay from increased atmospheric density, while prolonged storm activity could damage power grids and telecommunications infrastructure. Bulgaria last recorded similar intensity levels during auroral displays witnessed across the country.
