Sanctions begin for unjustified price hikes in Bulgaria

Bulgaria has transitioned from warnings to active enforcement against merchants charging unjustified prices following euro adoption preparations. Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov announced that inspectors have identified 65 violations among more than 250 businesses nationwide selling essential products, with penalties proceeding against retailers unable to justify their markups. The National Revenue Agency will publish sanction details after compiling comprehensive data, while the Commission for Protection of Competition continues tracking pricing through its public monitoring platform.

Government outreach efforts have included over 420 informational sessions with municipalities, businesses, and at-risk populations across urban and rural areas. Ministries conducted approximately 90 sector-specific briefings addressing the economic impacts of the currency changeover. Officials reported growing public acceptance of euro adoption as awareness campaigns expanded, with increasing numbers of citizens expressing full support for joining the single currency zone.
