CEC says Bangladesh’s future hinges on upcoming election
Bangladesh’s top election official declared that the nation has reached a pivotal moment where those managing the upcoming parliamentary voting will shape the country’s democratic trajectory.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin addressed security personnel on Monday during a training session for Ansar and Village Defence Party forces, stating he accepted his role as an opportunity to deliver substantive reform rather than fulfill routine responsibilities. He said credible voting requires political cooperation and involves approximately one million workers. The commissioner announced innovations for the February ballot, noting incarcerated individuals and citizens abroad can register through a mobile application. Election workers will vote through postal ballots distributed via an app launching Nov. 16, with materials sent to their registered locations.
Director General Abdul Motaleb Sajjad Mahmud said roughly 500,000 Ansar members will provide security services during the election. The force recruited 145,000 new personnel over the past year and plans to continue instruction through December. Digital systems will assign duties while screening out members facing complaints. Nasir Uddin cautioned against misinformation circulation and announced the creation of a verification unit to combat artificial intelligence misuse.
