Chattogram Port tariff hike sparks clash with business leaders

A new tariff structure for services at Chattogram Port takes effect on Wednesday, sparking a clash between the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) and key stakeholders. Business leaders, opposing the tariff hike, met on Sunday and demanded the decision be delayed until discussions with stakeholders are concluded.

Under the Chattogram Port Users Forum, they sent a letter on Tuesday to the chief adviser, urging the suspension of the new tariffs, citing potential negative impacts. The Bangladesh Maritime Law Society also demanded the cancellation of the notice raising the tariffs.

CPA Secretary Omar Faruk confirmed the tariffs would take effect as per the gazette notification, but no directives had been received regarding the business leaders’ demands. The tariff increase, averaging 41%, raises concerns about its impact on trade, inflation, and the port’s competitiveness.
