Child deaths from air pollution surge in Bangladesh, report warns
Child deaths from air pollution in Bangladesh and other least developed countries have reached alarming levels, according to a report by Zero Carbon Analytics. Air pollution is now the second leading cause of death among children under five, with more than a quarter of these deaths linked to polluted air. Bangladesh, one of the most affected countries, recorded over 19,000 child deaths in 2021 due to pollution. The report also highlights that children in less developed countries face a 94 times higher risk of dying from air pollution than those in wealthier nations.
Pollution from industries, household activities, and brick kilns is particularly harmful. The report calls for a shift to clean energy to prevent further harm.
