Chuck Russell says Jim Carrey could play Freddy
Director Chuck Russell said Robert Englund remains the only true Freddy Krueger in his eyes, but believes Jim Carrey could take on the role if the series took a bold new turn. Russell directed Carrey in The Mask and praised his range, suggesting a fresh approach like Wes Craven’s meta 1994 film New Nightmare would be necessary. Englund, who first played Freddy in 1984, stated in 2023 that age and physical limits prevent him from returning to the part, though he would accept a cameo. He named Kevin Bacon as a strong potential successor. After Englund’s last appearance in Freddy vs. Jason in 2003, Jackie Earle Haley portrayed Freddy in the 2010 remake. Russell expressed interest in another Elm Street film with full backing and noted Patricia Arquette, who played Kristen Parker in Dream Warriors, has publicly said she would return.
