Coast Guard opens fire after vehicle rams base entrance
Coast Guard personnel shot a driver and wounded a bystander after a vehicle attempted to breach the entrance of Coast Guard Base Alameda in California late on Thursday night. The suspect ignored commands and reversed at high speed toward security officers near the island facility in Alameda, prompting guards to fire their weapons around 10 p.m., the Department of Homeland Security reported.
The driver suffered a stomach wound and faces a mental health assessment after arrest. A civilian sustained minor fragment injuries at the scene and left the hospital after treatment. Both individuals are expected to recover from their wounds.
The FBI has assumed control of the investigation with support from Coast Guard officials and additional agencies. Authorities declined to identify the driver or confirm any connection to an immigration enforcement protest held earlier that day near the base entrance. No Coast Guard members sustained injuries from the confrontation at the bridge connecting to Coast Guard Island near Oakland’s waterfront district.
