Man sues D.C. police over detention for playing Star Wars music
A Washington resident filed a federal lawsuit on Thursday, accusing police of illegally detaining him after he followed an Ohio National Guard patrol while broadcasting the Imperial March theme from Star Wars through his mobile device. Sam O’Hara claims officers handcuffed him for approximately 15 to 20 minutes near 14th and R Streets NW on September 11, following a complaint from Guard Sgt. Devon Beck then released him without filing charges.
The legal action names the District of Columbia, four Metropolitan Police Department officers and Beck as defendants. O’Hara alleges violations of his First and Fourth Amendment rights, plus claims of false arrest, false imprisonment, and battery under local law.
The incident occurred as out-of-state National Guard units conducted patrols across Washington following deployment orders issued by President Donald Trump in August. Authorities named in the complaint have not responded in court proceedings, according to wire service reports.
