Two killed as crane collapses onto barge in Everett
A crane fell onto a barge above the Mystic River in Everett, Massachusetts, on Friday, killing two construction workers who were dismantling sections of a former Exxon terminal near Rover Street. Emergency crews from several departments arrived after the equipment toppled for reasons authorities have not determined.
Fire Chief John Hickey said one worker died at a hospital after rescue teams pulled him from the wreckage. The second victim remained pinned beneath the collapsed crane, requiring another piece of heavy equipment to recover his body from the water and dock area.
Police Chief Paul Strong said a firefighter already present at the work site administered immediate medical care following the accident. Mayor Carlo DeMaria identified both men as between 30 and 40 years old.
Investigators continue examining what caused the crane to fail at the commercial waterfront location. Officials have not disclosed whether additional workers sustained injuries from the collapse.
