Croatia Airlines tail wows world design judges

Croatia Airlines has received an international design honor from the World Intellectual Property Organization, or WIPO. The organization selected the airline’s distinctive aircraft tail pattern for inclusion in a centenary publication celebrating a century of the Hague Agreement.

The design, created by Ivana Ivankovic in 2004 and updated in 2024, features a modern interpretation of the classic Croatian checkerboard. The publication commended the pattern for blending national symbolism with a forward-looking aesthetic, ensuring the airline’s instant recognition globally.

This recognition underscores the value of a design that successfully merges national identity with contemporary industrial design principles. The tail pattern is noted for carrying cultural meaning while representing a precise and symbolic structural form.
