Deadly rains devastate Mexico, killing 64 and flooding cities

Heavy rain in Mexico last week led to at least 64 deaths and left 65 people missing, according to the government. The storms, caused by a tropical depression, triggered floods and landslides, especially along the Gulf Coast and central states. The depression, which hit as the rainy season was ending, overwhelmed already saturated rivers and weakened mountains.

Around 100,000 homes were damaged, and key infrastructure like bridges was destroyed. Hidalgo and Veracruz suffered the worst damage, with Veracruz reporting 29 deaths and 18 missing, while Hidalgo had 21 dead and 43 missing. Thousands of rescue workers have been deployed to help, and power has mostly been restored. Authorities are also focused on controlling mosquito-borne diseases.
