Developers count on rent-to-own to boost housing access

Developers want the government’s push for banks to back the rent-to-own plan to help more Malaysians buy homes.

The Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association (Rehda) president, Datuk Ho Hon Sang, said this would help middle-income people who can’t afford lower-cost homes or buy expensive ones.

Rehda also praised the continued benefits for first-time buyers, such as the stamp duty exemption on homes priced up to RM500,000, lasting until December 2027. It also backed increasing the Housing Credit Guarantee Scheme to RM20 billion, which could help 80,000 potential homeowners.

UEM Sunrise’s Hafizuddin Sulaiman said rent-to-own plans and build-then-sell ideas will add value long-term. Mah Sing’s Tan Sri Leong Hoy Kum said changes to LPPSA financing will improve homeownership chances for civil servants.
