Dhaka College students protest seeking ISKCON ban
Students from Dhaka College marched on Friday afternoon to demand that authorities prohibit the International Society for Krishna Consciousness from operating in Bangladesh. The demonstrators accused the religious group of participating in violent crimes and human rights abuses across the nation. Protesters gathered after prayer services, walked through several neighborhoods, then held a rally at the campus entrance.
Mohammad Mamun from Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir told the crowd that citizens would respond without waiting for government intervention if officials failed to act swiftly. He referenced a 2013 media report that described the organization’s aggressive behavior. Redwan Ahmed from Islami Chhatra Andolan warned that some groups were attempting to divide communities along religious lines despite widespread support for peaceful coexistence.
Dhaka University students held a similar demonstration on Thursday night near the campus. Mahtap Islam said investigators must examine claims about the group’s role in an alleged abduction. Police arrested a BUET student on Wednesday night on assault charges and rescued a religious leader from Panchagarh one day after his reported kidnapping from Gazipur.
