Dhaka court grants remand for NSU student Apurba Paul over Quran desecration case

A Dhaka court on Tuesday approved a five-day remand for Apurba Paul, a 23-year-old North South University student, in a case accusing him of desecrating the Quran and offending religious feelings through a Facebook post. The order came after police requested a 10-day remand. Apurba didn’t have a lawyer represent him in court. Earlier, police arrested him on October 5 from his home in Vatara after a video of him disrespecting the Quran spread online, causing public outrage. Apurba was reportedly beaten by a mob during his arrest. Following the incident, NSU expelled him from its Media and Journalism Department.
