Dhaka University teacher files case over defamatory photos, remarks

A faculty member at Dhaka University has brought criminal charges against a journalist and three others for allegedly manipulating her photographs and publishing defamatory content through social media platforms.

Shehreen Amin Bhuiyan Monami, who teaches in the Public Administration Department and works as an assistant proctor, submitted her complaint at Shahbagh Police Station. Station chief Md Khalid Munsur acknowledged receiving the case and said authorities were proceeding with legal measures. Court documents identify journalist Mujtaba Khandaker as allegedly altering her image with inappropriate captions about clothing choices. Writer Mohiuddin Mohammad Shehreen stands accused of reposting material with sexually explicit commentary, while student Nirab Hossain allegedly made improper remarks beneath a media outlet’s posting. A fourth defendant, Ashfaq Hossain Ivan, reportedly distributed additional doctored images.

Monami told officials that anonymous accounts continued spreading altered pictures with offensive text, causing severe psychological distress. She consulted campus administrators before filing charges. The student government organization demanded prosecution under cybersecurity laws and pledged assistance to Monami. Representatives from multiple student committees accompanied her during the complaint process.
